Christmas 2026 · Care home gift matching

A quiet moment of kindness, for someone’s quiet Christmas.

Just Joy matches care home residents who have no family, visitors or gifts this Christmas with kind people who’d love to give them something to unwrap - and a reminder that they matter.

It’s about the thought, not the price tag.

Why Just Joy

Christmas is magical for so many of us. For others, it can be incredibly lonely.

We’re lucky to have people around us who love us, to exchange gifts, share food and enjoy the little traditions we sometimes take for granted. But some people will wake up on Christmas morning with…

  • No present to open.
  • No visitor to see.
  • No one to remind them that they matter.

We’d really love to change that, for a few people this year.

How it works

From a little wish to a gift on Christmas morning

  1. 01

    Care homes share a wish

Local care homes tell us about residents who genuinely have nobody - just a first name, age and a little idea of something they’d like.

  2. 02

    You’re matched with a resident

Clare emails you their first name, age and a little idea of what they’d love - someone you might never otherwise meet.

  3. 03

Pop it in a gift bag

Add a handwritten Christmas message and a friendly photo, then tuck it all into a gift bag under tissue paper - no wrapping needed.

  4. 04

    Collected & delivered

Clare collects gifts in the last two weeks before Christmas and delivers them on Christmas Eve, ready for staff to hand out on Christmas Day.

The wishes

Small wishes, chosen with care

Here’s the kind of thing residents ask for. Pick a tag and we’ll be in touch with your match.

Our ethos

Just Joy isn’t about being seen to do something kind. It’s about making sure someone else feels seen because of your kindness.
Clare Head Elf, Just Joy

Kindness without an audience

Kindness doesn’t need recognition or acknowledgement to be meaningful. A quiet moment is enough.

For someone you may never meet

Take a moment to think of them, choose something especially for them, and show them someone is thinking of them.

Shared quietly

Tell people through conversations and personal recommendations, keeping the focus on the person receiving the kindness, not the giver.

In every gift bag

Three little things that mean a lot

You don’t have to spend lots of money or do anything extravagant. A simple gift and a few kind words could mean more than we realise.

A thoughtful gift

Chosen especially for them, from the little idea they shared. Any budget is welcome - it’s the thought that counts.

A handwritten Christmas message

A few warm words or a little letter, popped in loose or in an unsealed envelope - something to keep and read again.

A friendly face

A photo of you, or a little piece of children’s artwork, so they can see who was thinking of them.

Packing your gift

Please don’t wrap your gift

Care homes may check each gift before it’s given, to keep their residents safe. So instead of wrapping paper, we kindly ask that you:

  • Use a gift bag, with tissue paper or similar on top to hide the contents at first.
  • Leave letters loose in the bag, or in an unsealed envelope.
  • No wrapping paper, tape or sealed boxes - the care home may need to look inside.
  • No food, sweets or chocolate unless Clare lets you know it’s okay - some residents have allergies, diabetes or other dietary needs.

Please read the Privacy & Gifting Disclaimer that comes with your recipient’s details.

Our promise

Small on purpose

No big organisation, no grand gestures - just a little kindness, a little thought and hopefully a whole lot of smiles.

Just Joy is kept small and manageable so every wish we take on can be fulfilled. We’d rather promise a handful and deliver every one than promise more than we can.

  • A strict no-cash rule - only thoughtful gifts, never money.
  • A simple constitution and privacy & gifting disclaimer that keep residents and everyone involved safe.
  • A community tradition we hope will grow, year on year.
Every gift is hand-delivered by Clare.

Good to know

A few gentle guidelines

The little rules that keep residents, care homes and everyone involved safe and happy.

Do I need to wrap my gift?
No - please don’t. Care homes reserve the right to check a gift before it’s given, to safeguard their residents. Pop it in a gift bag with tissue paper on top to hide it from sight, and leave any letters loose or in an unsealed envelope.
Can I include chocolates or sweets?
Only if Clare lets you know your resident has permission. Care homes tell us whether residents can receive gifts beyond those listed. If you haven’t been told otherwise, please assume no edible gifts - this may be due to allergies, diabetes or other dietary and medical needs.
When will my gift be collected?
Clare plans to collect gifts during the last two weeks before Christmas, depending on how many gifts and care homes there are. Gifts are stored for as little time as possible before being delivered to the care homes on Christmas Eve.
What will I know about my recipient?
Just their first name, age and a little idea of something they might like, sent to you by email once you’ve been matched.
Can I donate money instead?
Just Joy has a strict no-cash rule. It’s all about thoughtful gifts chosen with care, never money.
Is Just Joy a registered charity?
Just Joy is a charitable initiative, but because of its strict no-cash rule it isn’t required to register. Instead, it has its own constitution - a simple rulebook setting out its purpose, decisions and how it runs - alongside a privacy & gifting disclaimer that safeguards everyone involved. Just ask Clare if you’d like a copy.
Can I tell people I’m taking part?
Please do share Just Joy through conversations and personal recommendations. We just gently ask that the focus stays on the person receiving the kindness, rather than the person giving it. There’s no expectation to publicise your involvement - every gifter’s contribution is valued, however quietly it’s given.
